How are you adjusting reinforcement to reduce maladaptive responses to negative feedback? Can you reinforce a more appropriate, alternative behavior to replace the maladaptive behavior?
What are some reinforcing consequences you can deliver either immediately following the desired behavior or following a practice session– things that this particular student enjoys, wants, seeks out, etc.?
A student with a history of explosive reactions to negative feedback may need powerful reinforcers to help motivate him to change. Create a list of highly reinforcing options to follow successful practice and provide choice. Consider using reinforcing activities that also tend to elevate mood and to calm the student. For the student who responds inappropriately to verbal feedback, a point system might be motivating to the student where he earns a certain number of points toward a favored activity for each appropriate response. Identify a token system, palatable to the student, which allows him to earn secondary reinforcement each time he uses the script or reminder card.
Are you using labeling and social praise to make the contingency between desired behavior and reinforcing consequence clear to the student?
What reinforcing consequences can you arrange that are more naturally or intrinsically connected to this targeted behavior?
An inappropriate response to negative feedback or handling a mistake poorly could result in being fired from a job or disciplinary action at school. Therefore it is important to reinforce the positive response to situations. Coordination among all instructors regarding labeling what the student does correctly and praising him for correct performance is necessary. Praise, high fives, or verbal recognition of his increasing competence with this skill will result in increased confidence and lowered anxiety.
