Video Models:

Can this skill be appropriately depicted in a video model?

The video model can provide a way to review and label body position, eye contact, smiles, nods, and/or verbal responses during the greeting, small talk exchange, or farewell.

Have you task analyzed this skill to ensure that your video clearly depicts every key step that comprises the skill?

Some students may require a video model that focuses exclusively on certain skills, such as the act of handshaking.  Initiating the handshake requires reading certain cues while maintaining and ending the handshake involve certain adjustments of eye contact, facial expression, pressure, and timing.  The model might capture all of these elements, or a single model may only focus on the 3-second interaction by showing hands shaking for a clear 1-2-3 count.  Such a model would not even show the faces of the people shaking hands if that extra information clutters the focus for the student.

Who will you use as “actors” in this video – will the targeted student be included in the video?

How will you ensure that the student experiences opportunities to not only review the skill via the video model, but to also engage in repeated rehearsal of the skill across multiple contexts?

student’s strengths, you may want to model a variety of situations via videos.  Regardless, always remember that merely reviewing a video model is not adequate to prepare the student for successful demonstration.  Actual practice is key!

Will the student be able to review the video just prior to expected performance of that skill (priming)?
