Once the skill is performed accurately and independently under one condition, are you arranging multiple opportunities for the student to practice the skill with different people, and in multiple settings?
As the student experiences successful conversational exchanges in familiar settings, how can you practice and prepare him for experiences across increasingly novel conditions? The student might be comfortable entering conversations with peers in informal situations but might struggle when it comes to entering conversations with less familiar adults or peers in the school or job setting. A wide array of potential situations needs to be considered in order to effectively program for generalization.
Are you arranging opportunities for the student to practice the targeted skill in natural environments and under natural conditions?
Have you adapted visual supports so that they can remain in the natural environments that this student encounters now, and in the future?
What types of visual scripts and reminder rule cues can be referred to in a variety of situations? How can they be stored for easy access? Social narratives might also be reviewed before going into a new situation.
Are you collecting data to make adjustments to your teaching and to ensure that the student is performing this social communication skill across multiple conditions?
