What are some reinforcing consequences you can deliver either immediately following the desired behavior or following a practice session– things that this particular student enjoys, wants, seeks out, etc.?
Ask the student what types of things motivate them. The more involved they are, the more motivated they are likely to be. Be sure to vary the reinforcing consequences as necessary so that the student does not become rigid about their reinforcement, but also to increase interest and motivation. Placing reinforcing activities at the end of a set of visual instructions will naturally reinforce following visual instructions.
Are you using labeling and social praise to make the contingency between desired behavior and reinforcing consequence clear to the student?
What reinforcing consequences can you arrange that are more naturally or intrinsically connected to this targeted behavior?
One natural reinforcing consequence to emphasize is “when I follow instructions, I get the task done correctly and the task will be finished.”
