What are some reinforcing consequences you can deliver either immediately following the desired behavior or following a practice session– things that this particular student enjoys, wants, seeks out, etc..?
The satisfaction of checking off all items on a to-do list is naturally reinforcing to many individuals. It gives them a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Sometimes, putting a relaxing or enjoyable activity at the end of a to-do list or schedule can also be reinforcing or motivating. You may want to incorporate motivating activities that fit in naturally with morning “getting ready” routine, such as reading the newspaper, checking email, eating breakfast, etc. Can family be encouraged to reinforce the student for completion of the list and for attractive appearance?
Are you using labeling and social praise to make the contingency between desired behavior and reinforcing consequence clear to the student?
What reinforcing consequences can you arrange that are more naturally or intrinsically connected to this targeted behavior?
