Graphic Organizers:

What type of graphic organizer(s) might the student require in order to visually represent and organize the concepts, feelings, or behaviors that relate to this particular topic?

“Sorting the concept” is one way to help teach this grooming and dressing.  Present the student with photographs of appropriately and inappropriately dressed and groomed people one at a time.  You can find photographs on the internet or in magazines. Then, have the student sort the pictures into an “appropriate” bin or envelope and an “inappropriate” bin or envelope.

Discuss why the various people are appropriately or inappropriately dressed or groomed.  Depending on the needs of the student, these cards may depict more obvious “right” versus “wrong” grooming and dressing choices, or the cards may depict much more subtle, situation-specific discriminations.

This activity is a great teaching tool because many individuals enjoy sorting.  Thus, you are teaching an important skill by playing to the student’s strength and keeping them engaged.

Below is one example of an organizer that you and the student might develop, which clearly distinguishes appropriate attire versus inappropriate attire.  This could also serve as a visual reminder cue for the student.
