Once the skill is performed accurately and independently under one condition, are you arranging multiple opportunities for the student to practice initiating conversations with different people, and in multiple settings?
Are you arranging opportunities for the student to practice conversations in natural environments and under natural conditions?
Think about areas where conversations happen most frequently; the hallways between classes, during break/lunch times, before and after school/job while waiting for transportation, during class time or work hours, and at sporting or social events. Can the student be encouraged to start a conversation with someone during those times?
Have you adapted visual supports so that they can remain in the natural environments that this student encounters now, and in the future?
Does the student need specific conversation starter cards or relationship targets designed for specific environments (on the job in a break room, during lunch or a club)? How would these be stored for easy access?
Are you collecting data to make adjustments to your teaching and to ensure that the student is able to initiate conversations or know when not to initiate across multiple conditions?
