What communication scripts might you use to support practice of this skill? Are these complete scripts or just key words to support initiation?
Below are examples of several level 2 conversation starter script cards. Note that a visual reminder cue may also be necessary to support the student as he practices evaluating a situation to determine if it is the right time to initiate a conversation. (See Visual Cues an for example)
On the script card, does the student need additional picture or word cues to define his body position, facial expression, gestures, etc. during the use of the script?
What additional visual clarity cues (e.g. color-coding, highlighting) might you add to the visual script to promote attention and comprehension for the student?
What scenarios might you present (using scenario Act it Out cards) to help students produce their own dialogue and interactions to practice or role-play in a scene?
Below are examples of scenario cards to support practice in initiating conversations. Note that these scenarios are arranged to depict the right time to initiate a conversation. You may also need to devise scenarios that help the student determine that it is the wrong time to initiate.
What video scenarios might you present to help students make accurate discriminations between appropriate and less appropriate responses?
Used in tandem with live role-play opportunities, video scenarios can provide clear examples of how to NOT perform a skill (juxtaposed to examples of how to perform the skill). Try recording the student’s or other actors’ performances of the “wrong way” to initiate a conversation, then allow the student to review the video and identify the errors.
Are you arranging frequent practice opportunities with visual scripts, scenarios, or conversation starters to build independence and fluency through repetition?
In order to align this intervention topic area with the unique needs of the student, do you need to create scripts in the View2do program?
