Target Selection and Task Analysis:
In what contexts does the student need to display this skill?
The student needs to display this skill in almost all contexts. Violating someone’s personal space can range from mildly awkward (sitting too close to someone) to extremely inappropriate (touching a co-worker’s private area). Invasions of personal space will make it difficult to get hired and to keep a job.
What are the steps that comprise this skill?
- Knowing appropriate personal space and boundary norms
- Understanding the rationale behind these norms
- Applying appropriate personal space and boundary norms
What are the various components that may need to be targeted within this skill?
Address issues that arise during standard conversations:
- Establishing appropriate distance at the onset of an interaction
- Maintaining appropriate distance during the interaction
- Maintaining appropriate distance at the conclusion of an interaction. For example, some students may begin to move too far away from their conversational partner before the conversation closes.
- Address issues that arise when seated:
- Keeping appropriate distance when seated (at meetings, lunch breaks, in theaters, etc.). Consider how the student might lean towards a seated partner, or how they arrange and use their hands and arms when next to their partner.
- Making decisions about when to sit next to someone versus two seats away, versus across from someone.
- Deciding where a student places his belongings (e.g. does he tend to drop his backpack on top of someone’s foot?).
- Keeping your hands and feet to yourself when seated and when standing.
Address issues that arise in community-based settings:
- When the student stands in line (e.g. at the store check-out, the movie theater, waiting to enter a school event), does he remain one to two large steps back?
- Is there a need to seek assistance from the parent(s) of a male student who selects a urinal or public shower stall right next to someone else, when he could have selected a stall two or three places down?
