What type of graphic organizer(s) might the student require in order to visually represent and organize the concepts, feelings, or behaviors that relate to this particular topic?
A graphic organizer is a great tool to illustrate what types of behaviors are okay to engage in with some people, but not others. For example, it is difficult for some people to determine when it is appropriate to hug someone. Use a graphic organizer to illustrate this point.
For example, you might draw a series of concentric circles (or print out the graphic below). On the inner-most circle, the student would write his name, or have him insert a picture of himself.
In the next circle: Identify people who it is okay to hug (e.g. family members, significant other).
In the next circle: Identify people who it is okay to hug, if they hug you FIRST: A close friend (specifically list these people, as many people may struggle to know who a “close” friend is), your job coach
In the outermost circle: Identify people who it is not okay to hug: Someone you have never met before, someone you just met, your mailman, your supervisor, etc.
Then explain the illustration: The people in the inner most circle are the people closest to you. Thus, it is okay to hug them. As you get further and further out of the circle, these people are less and less close to you, and it becomes more and more inappropriate to hug them.
Is there a way to visually or thematically incorporate the student’s interests into this graphic organizer to increase motivation and engagement?
What additional visual cues (e.g. icons, bolding, highlighting, color-coding) might you add to the graphic organizer to clarify concepts and to direct attention to key details?
For instance, should the outermost circle in your graphic organizer be outlined in red (or the student’s least favorite color) to signify the discrimination between people it might be okay to hug versus those who it is almost never okay to hug? Should each circle, from innermost to outer (or vice versa), be outlined in an increasingly bold shade to clarify concepts?
In order to align this intervention topic area with the unique needs of the student, do you need to create a graphic organizer in the View2do program?
