Communication Systems, Scripts, and Scenarios:

What communication scripts might you use to support practice of this skill? Are these complete scripts or just key words to support initiation?

You may need to teach the student what they should do when they are finished with their tasks.  You could teach this by using a communication script.  The support provided by the script will vary depending on the student’s level of functioning.  For example, you may provide a written script for a student with a strong reading level.  For an emerging reader, you may provide more pictures or images on the script.  You should role play the script to provide the student with multiple practice opportunities.

Here are examples of very simple scripts for how to ask what to do next.

Managing Downtime - Scripts

On the script card, does the student need additional picture or word cues to define his body position, facial expression, gestures, etc. during the use of the script?

In the situation above, it may help to write a reminder of who to ask.  For some jobs, it is only appropriate to ask one particular supervisor.  For other jobs, it may be okay to ask a supervisor, job coach, or more senior co-worker.  Make sure the student knows who they should ask.

What additional visual clarity cues (e.g. color-coding, highlighting) might you add to the visual script to promote attention and comprehension for the student?

What scenarios might you present to help students practice what to do in a given situation?
