Generalization:

Are you arranging opportunities for the student to practice the skill in various tasks and with different materials? Are you arranging opportunities for the student to practice the targeted skill in natural environments and under natural conditions?

While repeated practice in a controlled setting may be required to create fluency in helping or in offering suggestions, moving to project settings or to other classrooms should involve team-oriented peers, as noted in Reinforcement.

Have you adapted visual supports so that they can remain in the natural environments that this student encounters now, and in the future?

If a video model has been developed and stored on a computer in the class, the instructor can discretely suggest that the student review the model just prior to group activities or class activities in which help or suggestions may naturally occur.

If a rule card or sequenced script card is helpful, can the student carry this in his pocket? Can the instructor, as needed, encourage the student to review the card when in the midst of a ‘helping’ or ‘suggesting’ situation?

Are you collecting data to make adjustments to your teaching and to ensure that the student is performing the skill across multiple conditions?
