Once the skill is performed accurately and independently under one condition, are you arranging multiple opportunities for the student to practice the skill with different people, and in multiple settings?
Are you arranging opportunities for the student to practice the targeted skill in natural environments and under natural conditions?
There is such a variety of situations where interactions will involve comments or compliments that continued practice using role playing, script cards, and visual reminder cards will be necessary to assure generalization of standard responses in all situations.
Practice in natural settings should, however, be carefully controlled especially when the student is practicing only one or two elements of the response pattern. The response pattern, as stated previously, requires attending to personal cues, attending to and processing words, potentially self-calming, using non-verbal cues, and using verbal responses. Arrange practice so that performance in natural settings is not demoralizing.
Have you adapted visual supports so that they can remain in the natural environments that this student encounters now, and in the future?
A visual reminder card might be placed on the student’s desk or work area if they need a reminder to “look up when an adult comes into your area”, or a reminder to “smile and nod” when a comment or compliment is given.
Reminder cards could also be placed inside of binders or in a student’s wallet that he could reference as necessary.
Are you collecting data to make adjustments to your teaching and to ensure that the student is performing the skill across multiple conditions?
