Target Selection and Task Analysis:

How can one conceptualize anger management?  In other words, what are the steps that a teacher, job coach, supervisor, etc. should take to understand what is driving the student’s anger or frustration?

When teaching the student to identify and manage anger, the instructor first needs to lay some groundwork as well as understand what is causing the anger. Your data is critical to effective intervention. Specifically, the instructor needs to:

  1. Analyze the situation
  2. Think from the student's perspective
  3. Set up the student for success

These steps, outlined in detail below, will support the instructor in developing a coping plan that is appropriate and effective for the student.  The instructor will then teach the coping plan to the student so that they can manage their anger successfully.
