Reinforcement:

What are some reinforcing consequences you can deliver following a practice session– things that this particular student enjoys, wants, seeks out, etc.?

Are you using labeling and social praise to make the contingency between desired behavior and reinforcing consequence clear to the student?

What reinforcing consequences can you arrange that are more naturally or intrinsically connected to this targeted behavior?

Using the previous example of how thank you letters can be used for personal reasons, explore ways to offer the student opportunities to write thank you letters to peers, family members, or instructors.  Did you have a Valentine’s Day party in class where cards were exchanged?  Did a guest come speak to the class about a special topic?  Use these situations for the student to practice writing a thank you letter to a card-giver or guest-speaker using the professional rules.
