Generalization:

Once the skill is performed accurately and independently under one condition, are you arranging multiple opportunities for the student to practice the skill with different people, and in multiple settings?

Practice of this skill can be varied during the initial job hunting/waiting for response instruction by changing the types of jobs or situations in practice.  Some students who have more trouble generalizing may need specific scripts that can be used in multiple situations, along with multiple practice sessions.  Students can practice their phone follow up skills with multiple instructors using their scripts in a variety of environments such as school, home, and community. Practice can be repeated by multiple instructors in preparation for the “real thing”.

Are you arranging opportunities for the student to practice the targeted skill in natural environments and under natural conditions?

Have you adapted visual supports so that they can remain in the natural environments that this student encounters now, and in the future?

Social narratives explaining the job hiring process, scripts, rule cards, reminder cards, and graphic organizers can all be organized in a job notebook that could be kept on the student’s desk at home or a place where the student will complete all job search-related tasks.  By keeping all information in one place, it can be easily accessible for the student to refer to and use during the process.

Are you collecting data to make adjustments to your teaching and to ensure that the student is performing the skill across multiple conditions?
