To Gain the Student's Attention
Give Me Five!
To use this strategy, just clap your hands twice (or use another kind of auditory signal), then raise your hand showing five fngers in the air.
The five expectations of the students are as follows:
- Mouth quiet
- Eyes on speaker
- Ears open
- Body still
- Hands free
Countdown
State the expectations of your students (e.g. lips closed and eyes open). Then, using a normal speaking tone and a predictable steady rate of speed, count backwards beginning from thirty. This strategy also works to decrease transition times and move briskly between activities.
