Door-to-Door Search

help wanted signSome places advertise for available positions in their window. They may have a "Help Wanted" sign in their window or somewhere inside the establishment.  Or, they may have flyers inside advertising for positions or a sign saying "Now Hiring."

If you see a "Help Wanted" sign posted at a place in which you may be interested in working, you can ask for an application.

Tip

Dress professionally when going door-to-door in search of employment.  First impressions are important!  See the job fairs section or interview section for tips on dressing professionally.

"Hi. I noticed the "Help Wanted" sign in the window (or at the cash register, etc.).  I am interested in this position. Do you have an application I can fill out or how do I go about applying for the job?" Video

icon of question markYou may also want to ask the following questions about the job while you are there: Video

  • "Is the job full time or part time?"
  • "What are the hours or what is the schedule for the job?"
  • "What are some of the typical job responsibilities or duties?"

The answers to these questions may affect whether or not you apply for the job.  For example, if you are looking for full time work and it is only part time, you may not want to apply for that job, or you may need to keep looking for a second part time job as well.

Finally, you can also inquire about jobs at places that are not advertising positions. It never hurts to ask! Video
