Application Sections - Education History

Education Form to fill out

Tip

You should have your resume with you when you complete this section of the application.

The next part of the application usually contains questions related to your educational history.  Companies want to know about your educational experiences for several reasons:

  • To determine if you have any specialized knowledge and coursework related to the job you are applying for.

  • Some companies / agencies will not hire you unless you have achieved a certain education level (i.e. high school degree, college degree).

  • To determine compensation rates.  Some companies / agencies pay a higher rate to a person with more education (i.e. a college degree, a graduate degree).

Most companies are only concerned with where you went to high school and beyond.  Companies usually don’t want to know where you went to elementary or middle school.  Remember to respond to each question honestly.  Here is what you will need to fill in on most application forms:

  1. High School:  School name, location (city and state), years attended, diploma earned (yes/no)

  2. College or University:  School name, location (city and state), years attended, major or area of study, degree earned (yes/no)
    Tip
If you have only completed high school and are not in college, leave the college and graduate school sections blank.  If you are currently in a 2-year community college, technical school, or 4-year college but have not yet graduated, do fill in the college section as much as possible.

  3. Graduate School:  School name, location (city and state), years attended, major or area of study, degree earned (yes/no)

  4. Other programs, courses:  School name, location (city and state), years attended, area of study

Note: If you took any special courses for certification or to obtain additional knowledge (i.e. at a community college or technical school), you might include that information in the "Other Programs, courses" section.
