WHAT is an application?

An application is a form (filled in by you) that contains job-related information about you.  Here is some information that you will need to provide on an application:

  • Name, address
  • Social Security Number and/or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

    What is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN): 

    An ITIN is a tax processing number that is issued by the IRS for individuals who are not eligible for an SSN, such as a foreign national or nonresident alien.  No one should have both an ITIN and a SSN.  Use whatever has been assigned to you on all forms that ask for SSN. 

  • Educational history (where and when you went to high school, college, etc.)
  • Employment history (specific information about other jobs, volunteer work, and internships that you have done)
  • References

YOU are the applicant = The person applying for the job.

Some companies may ask you to complete this application online. Other companies have you complete an application at an interactive kiosk at their store. An interactive kiosk is a small stand that has a device like a computer to complete an application or other activities. Many companies still have you complete a paper application.

Most companies require that you complete an application when you are seeking a job with them.  You might complete the application form on paper, or you might complete it on the computer.  Every company has a slightly different application form, and they have certain rules about how they want their application completed. 

WHY is an application important? 

You complete an application form because the company needs job-related information about you.   Sometimes many people apply for the same job at a company.  So, the company needs a quick and easy way to review the applicant’s (your) information.  In many cases, the application is the first thing that a company will want from you.  Usually, a company will not interview you or hire you unless you have properly completed their application.
