Application Formats - Requesting Applications in Person
When you are looking for a job application, you might need to go into the place of business (a store, office, etc.) to obtain a paper copy. You should complete the paper application in a quiet place (i.e. home, library) where you can concentrate.
Before you go into a place of business:
- Make sure you are dressed appropriately. This means you should wear neat, clean clothing.
- Make sure you have showered within the last 12 hours. Comb your hair, apply deodorant, and brush your teeth just before you go.

When you walk into the place of business, follow these steps:
- Locate an employee. They might be a person behind the counter or desk, or may be wearing a uniform or a name badge. To help you know who to look for, take a look at these pictures of employees.

- When you find an employee, do not interrupt them if they appear busy. A busy employee might be on the phone, talking to someone, or helping a customer. You might need to wait a few minutes until they are not busy anymore.
Here's what you might say to the employee: "Excuse me, I would like to pick up a job application. Can you please give me two copies, or can I please see your manager?" You should request two copies because if you make a mistake on the first copy, you will still have a second one to use.
- If the employee can give you one or two copies of the application, be sure to thank them before you go.

Here’s how to talk to a manager:
When the manager comes to see you, you should face the manager, smile, and extend your hand to shake hands. Here is what you might say: "Hi , my name is ____. I am interested in working here and I would like to pick up two copies of a job application."
The manager might give you an application right away and then you can leave. Be sure to say "Thank you" before you go!
Or, the manager might want to ask you some questions before you go. You should practice answering these questions ahead of time. Here are some questions that the manager might ask you:
- "Are you looking for full time or part time?"
- "When can you start working?"
- "Do you have any experience doing this type of job?"
- "Are there certain days you are not able to work?"
