Large Job Search Websites - Conducting a Search
Large nationwide search engines include websites such as www.indeed.com, www.careerbuilder.com, or www.monster.com. These websites generally have a search engine on their main page in which you search for the type of job you are interested in, and the location of where you would like to work. The popularity of job websites and search engines is ever changing. Our website was last updated 2018/19 with the then available data. You can always find updated information using any search engine with the term “job website search engines”.
The method for searching for these jobs varies depending on the site. Specifically, you might be asked to search using:
- A drop-down menu
- Typing a job title into a search box
- Keyword search
- Location
Many of the sites offer more than one of these methods. Almost always, you will also be asked to include the general location of where you would like to work. These search methods are described in more detail below:
Some sites provide a scroll down menu from which you can pick a particular industry or type of job that you are interested in. This is an easy way to do a search because you do not have to think of a job title or keyword on your own— the options are provided for you. One downside is that the type of job you are interested in may not be one of the options in the scroll down menu. Or, you may want to search for something more specific than what is presented in the scroll down menu. Here is an example of a site that offers a scroll down menu for you to choose the type of job you are interested in:

Another method is to search by typing in the title of the job you are seeking. For example, you could type in "retail" if that is the type of job you are seeking. This method is useful because it allows you to search for exactly what you are looking for. Searching for a specific job title may lead you to the exact jobs you are interested in. However, if you are too specific, there may not be jobs that are available or posted. This web site page also gives you options to narrow the search by distance, Job type, etc. Here is an example of typing in the job title you are interested in:

Typing in a keyword is another search method that is used by many of these websites. Searching for a keyword rather than a searching for a specific job title can often broaden the results you are given. A larger variety of jobs may result from a keyword search. This can be very helpful if you are not picky about the particular job you are looking for or would like a lot of options. This method often gives you more options and job listings than searching for a specific job title. For example, if you are interested in a variety of jobs within the medical field, you could type in "health care." Below are two examples of job search web sites that might be interesting to explore.

Finally, you will almost always be asked to type in the city or location where you are seeking employment. If you live in a small town, you may want to type in the name of the largest nearby city in order to get more results. You may also be able to type in your zip code. Searching by your zip code is the recommended way of searching for locations because it generally provides the most accurate results.
