Be proactive, not reactive!  When you are already upset, that is not the time to learn your coping plan.  Instead, you should practice your coping plan when you are at home and not stressed. 

icon of hand writing Write down your plan and keep it in an easily accessible place, such as your wallet or top desk drawer.   Determine when, where, for how long, and how often you will practice your coping plan.  The more you practice the better.  Aim to practice it every day.  Not only will this prepare you for when you need it, but it is a chance to relax and enjoy yourself every day.Video

Here are three examples of coping plans. 

Example #1:

This plan is the size of a full sheet of paper.  Pictures accompany the written words for an additional reminder of what to do.

Example #2:

This plan is roughly the size of an index card.  It is designed this way so that it is small enough to fit into your wallet.  That way, it is almost always near you (if you carry your wallet with you) so that you can use it whenever you need it.

Example #3:

This plan is also small enough to fit into your wallet or keep in your desk drawer.  It is a reminder about possible strategies to use when frustrated or upset.
