  • Stress:  Caused by any event or thought that makes you feel physical and/or mental tension.  Stress is often described as a mix of emotions—frustration, anxiety, nervousness, anger, fear, confusion, and even sadness.
     
  • Coping: Refers to the actions and thoughts you use to manage your stress. 

Everyone feels stressed, anxious, and frustrated at work sometimes.  Feelings of stress can be ongoing (lasting for hours or days), or these feelings can be brief, and caused suddenly by a specific event.  How do you know when you are feeling stressed?

These are some physiological (bodily) signs of stress:

  • Sweating
  • Red face
  • Body aches or pains
  • Tense muscles
  • Increased heart rate
  • Eyes watering
  • Upset stomach
  • Poor sleep habits
  • Hyperactivity
  • Headache
  • Exhaustion
  • Shallow breathing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Increase in appetite
  • Inability to concentrate

Inappropriate expressions of stress and frustration in the workplace::

When a person does not use appropriate self-calming and coping strategies at work, they might show their stress in an inappropriate manner.  Here are examples of inappropriate expressions of stress and frustration in the workplace:

XYelling at a boss, co-worker, or customer
XSending a rude email or text message
XMaking a rude phone callAngry people
XRefusing to respond to others
XLeaving work early
XKicking the wall
XThrowing items
XDestroying materials
XYelling or crying
XHiding in a bathroom
XAvoiding work duties
XVenting on social media or any internet platform

These inappropriate responses could get you fired!
