Before the Interview - Prepare Materials

Person working on computerYou should bring certain materials to the interview with you. When you have these materials, you will be more prepared and organized.

  • Two copies of your resume.  Give one to the interviewer, and keep one for yourself.

  • A copy of your social security card, in case the interviewer asks for it.

  • Your driver’s license or a photo identification.

  • If your resume does not include information about references, print out 2 to 3 references and their contact information on a sheet of paper to give to your interviewer if asked.

  • Pen and paper in case you need to write something down during the interview.

  • A list of 2-3 questions you may have about the position.

  • Any important information that you learned when you researched the company.

  • Carry your materials in a professional looking folder, briefcase, day planner, or hand bag.  When you sit down for the interview, keep a briefcase or bag at your feet on the floor.  If you carry a folder or day planner, you can keep it in your lap.  Do not put your materials on the interviewer’s desk- that is their space.

Tip

Never bring food or gum to an interview.  Make sure you eat a good meal or snack before the interview.  You want to be able to concentrate on your interview, not on your hungry stomach!
